About Radiology

Radiology is a medical branch in which medical imaging is employed to diagnose and treat various ailments in the body. The popular imaging techniques being used are X-ray radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine including positron emission tomography (PET), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Interventional radiology refers to the performance of (generally minimally invasive) medical procedures with the guidance of imaging technologies.

Some commonly performed radiology procedures are:

  • General x-rays
  • Computerized Tomography (CT Scan)
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Fluoroscopy
  • Ultrasound including vascular Ultrasound (US)
  • Interventional Procedures (CT/US/Fluoroscopy)

Radiologists are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries using medical imaging techniques, such as x-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography (PET) and ultrasound.

In general, a radiologist:

  • Acts as an expert imaging consultant to your referring physician
  • Directs radiology technologists (the specialists who operate the equipment) to ensure quality exams
  • Helps determine the appropriate imaging exam for your needs
  • Recommends further exams or other next steps in your treatment
  • Reviews and interprets the images from your exam
  • Provides your physician with a detailed report of your exam

Radiology plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of many diseases, especially cancer.  Early diagnosis saves lives. Without diagnosis there can be no treatment, there can be no cure.

Healthcare practitioners today cannot manage patients without diagnostic imaging.  For a range of diseases, your family doctor and emergency care physicians rely on radiology test results to determine your diagnosis and the course of your treatment.

Radiologists are the physicians who specialize in interpreting the results of these imaging exams. Family physicians and other specialists turn to radiologists for consultation on the safest and most effective exam, and what the results mean for the patient and the treatment options.

  • X-Ray: - X-ray is a non-invasive exam that involves a low dose of radiation to produce pictures of the inside of the body, which make x-rays an extremely safe diagnostic test.  X-rays are commonly used to determine broken bones (fractures) and damaged ligaments, and organ diseases such as pneumonia in the lung, or cancer.
  • Computer Tomography (CT): - CT scans are much more detailed than regular X-Rays and can determine several conditions that can get undetected on other imaging tests. A CT Scan, “Computerized Tomogram” or CAT scan is a non-invasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions that may not be visible on other types of medical studies by using advanced x-ray technology to take pictures of your body.
  • Nuclear Medicine: - Nuclear medicine is a branch of medical imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose or treat a variety of diseases, including many types of cancers, heart disease, and certain other abnormalities within the body.
  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET/CT): - PET/CT is a mix of two scan techniques – a PET Scan and a CT Scan.  The combination of procedures can help to detect condition that may not show up on a standard X-ray, or a CT or PET scan alone.  While a CT scan shows detailed anatomical structure, a PET scan provides information on organ function and metabolism.  PET/CT is mainly used to detect various types of cancers and assessing cancer (staging, or restaging) that has spread (metastases), and for the evaluation of treatment response by looking at biochemical changes in the cancer, but there are growing clinical applications in cardiology and other fields.
  • Virtual Colonoscopy: - Virtual colonoscopy is a non-invasive procedure using high-end imaging techniques to produce a 3-D reconstruction of the inner surface of the colon, which can then be evaluated for abnormalities such as polyps by specially trained radiologists.
  • Ultrasound: - Ultrasound is an easy, safe, harmless diagnostic procedure that recoils high-frequency sound waves off parts of the body and captures the returning “echoes” as images. There is no injection or radiation exposure associated with ultrasound. There are many different types of ultrasound exams including abdomen, carotids, venous, pelvic, thyroid, renal, scrotum and obstetrical.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): - MRI is a non-invasive medical imaging exam that helps radiologists to diagnose a variety of diseases including cancer.   MRI uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses, and a computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone, and other structures inside the body. In some cases, contrast material may be used during the MRI scan to show certain structures more clearly. Unlike CT scanning or general x-ray studies, no ionizing radiation is involved with an MRI.
  • Mammography: - Mammography is a particular type of imaging that employs a low-level x-ray with high-contrast, high-resolution film for examination of the breasts to assist in the detection of breast diseases. The images of the breasts can be fetched on film at a view box, or as soft copy on a digital mammography workstation. Most medical experts agree that successful treatment of breast cancer often is linked to early diagnosis.
