About Bariatric Surgery

Are you facing weight gain issues and found that medicines don’t work at all in your case? If this is the truth, this is the time when you should look towards the surgical treatment of the problem and the first name that comes to mind is Bariatric Surgery. Commonly known as weight loss surgery, this surgery helps people with high obesity to lose weight. It may be an option if you cannot lose weight through diet and exercise or have serious health problems caused by obesity.

A large number of people from different countries come to India to seek an affordable and effective way to treat obesity. From teenagers to aged men & women and even children, obesity has become a disastrous disease among people of all ages. And when all other options don’t exhibit promising results, surgical option emerges out as the most sought-after option for them.

With 30 million of India's adult population overweight and obese and 62 million diabetics, weight-loss surgery is growing at 8% annually. "Roughly 15,000 procedures were done last year, up from 5,000 just three years ago.

Bariatric surgery is the best available option to treat obesity. It's not a shortcut to weight loss but a treatment for obesity-related diseases such as hypertension, arthritis, dyslipidemia (high cholesterol and blood fats), acid reflux, sleep disorders and diabetes.

There are different types of weight loss surgery done in India. They sometimes restrict the amount of food one can take in. Some types of surgery also affect how you digest food and absorb nutrients. All types have risks and complications, such as infections, hernias, and blood clots. A large number of people who have undergone the surgery lose weight quickly, but regain some weight later on. If you follow diet and exercise recommendations, you can keep most of the weight off. You will also need medical follow-up for the rest of your life.

There are primarily three types of bariatric surgery:

  • Laparoscopic adjustable gastric band
  • Gastric sleeve surgery also called sleeve gastrectomy
  • Gastric bypass
  • Duodenal switch

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band: - In this kind of surgery, the surgeon fixes a ring with an inner inflatable band around the upper part of your stomach to make a small pouch. This makes your stomach feel full even after eating a small amount of food. The band houses a circular balloon inside that is filled with salt solution. The surgeon can regulate the size of the opening from the pouch to the rest of your stomach by injecting or removing the solution through a small device known as a port placed under your skin.

Gastric Sleeve: - In gastric sleeve surgery, commonly known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy, a surgeon detaches most of your stomach, leaving only a banana-shaped section that is sealed with staples. Similar to gastric band surgery, this surgery decreases the amount of food that can stay in your stomach, making you feel full sooner. Taking out part of your stomach may also affect gut hormones or other factors such as gut bacteria that may affect appetite and metabolism. This kind of surgery cannot be overturned because some of the stomachs are removed forever.

Gastric Bypass: - Gastric bypass surgery, also known as a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, has two sections. First, the surgeon staples your stomach, making a small pouch in the upper section. The staples make your stomach extremely smaller, thus making you eat less and feel full sooner.

After this, the surgeon cuts your small intestine and fixes the lower part of it directly to the small stomach pouch. Food then bypasses most of the stomach and the upper part of your small intestine so your body absorbs fewer calories. The surgeon connects the bypassed section farther down to the lower part of the small intestine. This bypassed section is still attached to the main part of your stomach, so digestive juices can move from your stomach and the first part of your small intestine into the lower part of your small intestine. The bypass also changes gut hormones, gut bacteria, and other factors that may affect appetite and metabolism. Gastric bypass is hard to reverse, although a surgeon may do it if medically required.

Duodenal Switch: - This surgery, also known as biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, is highly complex as compared to others. The duodenal switch includes two separate surgeries. The first is very much like gastric sleeve surgery. The second surgery forwards food to bypass most of your small intestine. The surgeon also attaches the bypassed section to the last part of the small intestine, permitting digestive juices to mix with food.

This kind of surgery enables people to lose more weight than the other three. However, this surgery is also the most possibly to cause surgery-related problems and a deficiency of vitamins, minerals, and protein in your body. Due to these reasons, surgeons do not generally perform this surgery as often.

The number of weight people loses after bariatric surgery rests on the person and on the kind of surgery performed on him or her. A study following people for 3 years after surgery found that those who had gastric band surgery lost an average of about 45 pounds. People who had gastric bypass lost an average of 90 pounds. Most people regained some weight over time, but weight regain was generally small compared to their preliminary weight loss.
