About Anesthesia

Anesthesia is an intrinsic and vital element of any surgical procedure as it paves the way for an effective and successful surgical outcome by restricting pain. Anaesthesiology concentrates on minimizing pain and maximizing perioperative comfort for patients in a clinical setting. There are myriads of healthcare centers in the country that are committed to improving the future of this field through innovative research and the development of future leaders through our educational programs.

Over the years, India has emerged out as the most sought-after medical tourism destination in the world and offers faster, precise, result-oriented and most importantly affordable healthcare services in the most comfortable setting.

Anaesthesiology actually creates a key link between the surgical fraternities and the patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures. Anaesthesiologists are becoming more important day by day with more number of neonatal and geriatric patients having associated major & minor problems emerging for surgery, apart from the disease for which the surgical procedure is to be carried out.

At healboat, we are associated with India’s leading healthcare service providers and provide people a one-stop avenue to explore all medical procedures and service providers.

More about Anesthesia

In most of the surgical procedures, certain medicines are given to the patients to relieve pain and sensation during surgery. The type and dosage of anesthesia are decided by an experienced anesthesiologist. Prior to surgery, the patient will meet with the physician anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist. The anesthesiologist will review a patient’s overall medical condition and history to plan the appropriate anesthetic for surgery.

There are different types of anesthesia. The type of anesthesia a patient get will depend on the type of surgery and your medical condition. Sedatives and analgesics may also be used as part of the anesthesia process. The different types of anesthesia include the following:

  • Local anesthesia: - Local anesthesia refers to an anesthetic agent used to temporarily stop the feeling of pain in a specific area of the body. The patient remains conscious in case of a local anesthetic. In case of a minor surgery, a local anesthetic is given via injection to the site or permitted to absorb into the skin. However, when a large area needs to be numbed, or if a local anesthetic injection is not a feasible option as it will not penetrate deep enough, surgeons may use other types of anesthesia.
  • Regional anesthesia: - Regional anesthesia is primarily employed to numb only the portion of the body that is supposed to undergo the surgery. Generally, an injection of local anesthetic is given in the region of nerves that are responsible for feeling to that part of the body. There are several forms of regional anesthetics:
  • Spinal anesthetic: - A spinal anesthetic is used for lower abdominal, pelvic, rectal, or lower extremity surgery. This form of anesthetic comprises injecting a single dose of the anesthetic medicine into the area that environs the spinal cord. The injection is applied to the lower back, below the end of the spinal cord, and leads to numbness in the lower body. This type of anesthesia is most often used in orthopedic procedures of the lower extremities.
  • Epidural anesthetic: - The epidural anesthetic is very much like a spinal anesthetic and is often used for surgery of the lower limbs and during labor and childbirth. This type of anesthesia involves continually infusing an anesthetic medication through a thin catheter (hollow tube). The catheter is placed into the space that surrounds the spinal cord in the lower back, causing numbness in the lower body. Epidural anesthesia may also be used for chest or abdominal surgery. In this case, the anesthetic medicine is injected at a higher location in the back to numb the chest and abdominal areas.

General anesthesia

General anesthesia is an anesthetic employed to enable full unconsciousness during surgery. The medicine is either inhaled through a breathing mask or tube or given through an intravenous (IV) line. A breathing tube may be inserted into the windpipe to maintain proper breathing during surgery. Once the surgery is done, the anesthesiologist stops the anesthetic and the patient is moved to the recovery room for further monitoring.

The role of anesthesiologists is extremely vital as they are trained to administer and control anaesthesia given during a surgical procedure. They are also responsible for managing and treating changes in your critical life functions- breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure--as they are affected by the surgery being performed. Further, they diagnose and treat any medical problems that might arise during and immediately after surgery.

Since anesthesia and surgery are closely related and meant to affect every system in the body, the anesthesiologist will conduct a preoperative meeting. Sometimes this is done in person; in other cases, the anesthesiologist will interview the patient over the phone. During this interview, the anesthesiologist will review patient’s medical history, as well as discuss the information mentioned above. He or she will also inform the patient about the outcomes during your surgery and discuss anesthetic options with him or her. This is also the time to discuss which medicines should be stopped, and which can continue before surgery, as well as when to stop eating before the surgery.
