About Tomotherapy

Tomotherapy or helical tomotherapy refers to a kind of radiation therapy that applies the radiation slice-by-slice. It employs an integrated approach to radiation therapy by fusing imaging and treatment delivery to precisely focus in a range of cancers.

Developed with the functionality of a CT scanner, Tomotherapyutilizes integrated imaging to improve treatment accurateness and beamlet-based delivery to guarranty precision. Organized, these features make treatments to be customized for each patient, reducing exposure to healthy tissue and noticeably vindicating side effects.

Tomotherapy has been specifically effective for the following conditions:

  1. Withdrawing previously exposed areas of the body
  2. Considering multiple metastases simultaneously
  3. Treating all metastases throughout the body concurrently
  4. Treating lung cancers, breast cancers, and prostate cancers

Many radiation therapy specialists are unwilling to apply repeat radiation to the same region of the body that has already exposed to radiation in the past. It can be hazardous to re-irradiate, asone could risk complications such as high scarring, ulceration or pain. However, Tomotherapy is a usual choice for retreating tumors that have already been irradiated. Due to the preciseness ofTomotherapy, it can make it can be safe to re-irradiate, because the nearby healthy tissues will getreceive radiation dosage.

With general radiation therapy, more often a dissimilar radiation therapy plan has to be developed for each distinct tumor treated. With Tomotherapy, it is quite easy to treat multiple tumors instantaneously, whether they are present in the brain, liver, lungs, bones, or in multiple organs.

Prostate Cancer

Tomotherapy can be employed to treat prostate cancer. A large number of people have heard about using IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy) to treat prostate cancer, and Tomotherapy is an extremely advanced type of IMRT. Many surgeons today use Tomotherapy in two ways to treat prostate cancer: either by itself, or in combination with high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy. Tomotherapy plus HDR brachytherapy is considered as abellicose treatment fusion. It may be an ideal option for patients with destructive tumors or men who look for the most powerful treatment available.

Brain Cancer

Tomotherapy can also be used to treat brain tumors in comparison to procedures like gamma-knife, cyber knife, or stereotactic radiosurgery. Tomotherapy is found to be suppler than these therapies in as it can treat various tumors simultaneously, can treat large or complex shaped tumors, and can be feasibly divided up into a string of daily treatments.

Before the evolution of IMRT and Tomotherapy, there was no feasible option toincrease multiple brain tumors or large tumors. Now by usingTomotherapy, a radiation oncologist onlysketches all the tumors on a computer screen and the computer prepare a treatment plan made up of thousands of tiny radiation beamlets which intersect on all the tumors. Doctors use Tomotherapy to treat different stages of brain cancer, including primary brain tumors (glioblastoma multiform), metastatic brain tumors, and recurring brain metastases.

Lung Cancer

Oncologistsnormally treat lung cancer with PAT treatment regimen. P.A.T. stands for PET scan, amifostine, and TomoTherapy. They perfrom a PET scan to check the exact location of the cancer, Tomotherapy to target it, and add amifostine (Ethyol) as a "radioprotectant" to safeguard the lungs against some level of destructed that can be caused by radiation therapy.

Breast Cancer

After a lumpectomy (partial mastectomy), radiation therapy is generally provided to the breast, to wipe out any cancer cells that may still be there. In case of early stage cancers, oncologists resort to breast brachytherapy, which consumes only five days, and treats only a part of the breast. However, in case of advanced breast cancers, or for women who do not want to undergo brachytherapy, doctors use external beam irradiation.

When Tomotherapy is employed, doctors are able to outline the high dose region much more accurately to the breast tissue. The high dosages can be separated from the lungs and heart. If lymph nodes, such as the internal mammary nodes are also being attached in the treatment, Tomotherapyleads to an even more histrionicdecrease in unwanted radiation. With Tomotherapy, doctors can also give a heavy dose each day to the region of the breast where the tumor is present. This can reduce the length of radiation therapy from seven weeks down to five weeks.

Head and Neck Cancer

IMRT is transforming the way that head and neck cancers are treated. With cancers of the tongue, throat, and larynx, often all the lymph glands of the neck need to be radiated together with the primary tumor. This generallycauses permanent damage to the salivary glands and dry mouth, also known as xerostomia. Tomotherapy, which is a customized form of IMRT, it became thinkable to treat the neck lymph nodes and dodge the salivary glands. Amifostine is also frequently included to radiation to augment the tolerance of the salivary glands to radiation, helping to avert the symptom of dry mouth.

Other Cancers

Doctors always examine every patient's cancer precisely to ascertain whether radiation therapy is ideal, to what extent, and with what type of radiation. Sometimes, a tumor is treated perfectly with basic 3D conformal radiation. Sometimes, the ideal choice resort to the use of IMRT. In other cases, with Tomotherapy, which often gives doctors the power to treat (and retreat) cancers that would not have been possible or safe with other types of radiation.
