About Sinus Surgery

The ear, nose, and throat expertswould prescribe several medications (antibiotics, decongestants, nasal steroid sprays, and antihistamines) and procedures (flushing) to bring relief to people reeling under acute sinusitis. There are cases when physician and patient discover that the infections are recurrent and/or non-responsive to the medication. In that case, surgery to expand the openings that drain the sinuses remains the last and only option.

Sinus infections are found to be extremely disturbing in the form of extreme headache and sometimes it becomes so difficult for people that they find them unable to breathe and perform daily activities. In such cases, sinus surgery emerges out as the most sought after way to ensure long-term relief.

The best part of this procedure is that the surgery is less extensive, there is often less elimination of normal tissues, and can frequently be done on an outpatient basis. Once the operation is done, the patient will sometimes have nasal packing. Ten days after the procedure, nasal irrigation may be recommended to prevent crusting.

Balloon Sinuplasty refers to a minimally invasive, breakthrough procedure used by an experienced ENT doctor to treat recurrent acute sinusitis patients, or chronic sinusitis patients, who have sinusitis symptoms that have not responded to sinus medications and therapies. Studies following chronic sinusitis patients report durable results lasting up to two years after the procedure.

In some regions, Balloon Sinuplasty can be carried out right in the ENT doctor’s office under local anaesthesia. The doctor starts by introducing a small, flexible balloon catheter into the nose to access the inflamed sinus. The sinus balloon is gradually bloated to reorganize the jammed nasal passage.

Contrary to conventional sinus surgery, Balloon Sinuplasty preserves the normal anatomy of the sinuses and mucosal tissue, and does not require the removal of bone and tissue.

Earlier, the only available surgical procedure for clearing clogged sinuses was known as functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), which eliminates bone and tissue from the nose to expand the sinus opening. This removal of bone and tissue can require painful nasal packing after surgery and lead to post-surgery pain and scarring.

Before undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery, patients should discuss with their physicians to ensure that all practical medical treatments have been tried. This list of medications that could possibly treat sinusitis is quite long. These medications include both prescription and over-the-counter treatments located at your local pharmacy. For acute sinusitis (an infection that usually occurs after a cold and lasts less than four weeks), antibiotics are the main treatment. In addition, nasal saline rinses or sprays may be used along with antibiotics. While nasal decongestant sprays (pseudoephedrine, oxymetazoline) can be used to treat nasal stuffiness, they should not be used longer than three days. With long-term use of nasal decongestant sprays, the nose can become dependent on them, and the nasal stuffiness could worsen. In addition, people who have high blood pressure, glaucoma, urinary retention, heart disease, and heart beat irregularities should consult their doctor before using decongestants because these medications can cause additional problems in these cases.
