About Septoplasty

In a large number of people worldwide, nasal obstruction is a commonly occurring problem. The biggest effect of this problem is the breathing trouble through nose. In most of the cases, patients resort of breathing through their mouth which leads to dry mouth. This issue becomes more problematic during night and people find it difficult to get proper sleep due to nasal congestion.

There could be numerous causes behind the onset of Nasal obstruction. For example, things like allergies can lead to nasal obstruction. Another very common cause of nasal obstruction is narrow nasal passages. Often, narrow nasal passages are the outcome of problems with the nasal septum and turbinate.

In such cases, your doctor will carry out a thorough examination of your symptoms and nose. You may undergo a procedure in the office called a nasal endoscopy to diagnose the cause of your nasal obstruction. A deviated septum can also be visible in a CT scan, but a scan is often not needed to diagnose the cause of nasal obstruction.

The surgery that is carried to rectify the problem is known as septoplasty. Septoplasty is most commonly performed to help ease nasal obstruction. Occasionally, septoplasty becomes a necessary part of other surgical procedures like sinus surgery or nasal tumour removal.

During a septoplasty procedure, the surgeon will try to flatten the cartilage and bone that have led to the septum being diverged. During the procedure, the lining (the mucosa) is first lifted off the cartilage and bone. The cartilage and bone can then be reshaped. Sometimes, portions of the cartilage and bone need to be eliminated. The lining is then laid back down.

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that is performed in the operating room under anaesthesia. The procedure is generally done under general anaesthesia, but your doctor can help you decide if local anaesthesia would be an effective option for you. The procedure is typically done on an outpatient basis. This means that patients come in and go home the same day.

One can expect to counter pain, fatigue, nasal stuffiness, and mild nasal drainage after the surgery. Pain is usually mild with this kind of surgery and is generally well controlled with oral pain medications. The stuffiness generallyemerges from swelling after the procedure, and typically begins to improve after the first week. You may have drainage of some mucus and blood from your nose after surgery. This is a normal part of the healing process.
