About Rhinoplasty

Sometimes referred as a “nose job” or “nose reshaping”, Rhinoplasty remains primary concerned with the facial balance and the proportions of nose. It is one of the most commonly done cosmetic plastic surgeries across the world. The sole objective of undergoing this surgery is to balance the aesthetics of nose to ensure proper facial harmony. Many times, genital defects lead to imbalanced nose in people.

Rhinoplasty is used to treat various conditions such as:

  • Nose size in contrast to facial balance
  • Nose width at the bridge or in the size and placement of the nostrils
  • Nose profile with noticeable humps or depressions on the bridge
  • Nasal tip that is distended or bulbous, drooping, overturned or curved
  • Nostrils that are huge, wide or upturned
  • Nasal irregularity

The term rhinoplasty is emerged from the German word “rhinoplastik” which denotes “changing the shape of the nose”. The technique encompasses first reaching out to the bone and cartilage support of the nose. This is doneby making incisions made inside the nose, where they are imperceptible. In some cases, an incision is made in the area of skin untying the nostrils. Next, the underlying bone and cartilage is abridged, augmented or rearranged to build a newly shaped structure. For instance, if the tip of the nose is too extended, the surgeon can carve the cartilage in this region to reduce it in size. If the bridge of the nose has a distinction, this can be reduced to ensure a more pleasing shape. If any portion of the nose appears unreasonably small, cartilage or soft tissue grafts can be induced to create balanced harmony. The angles of the nose in relation to the upper lip or the forehead can also be altered by further sculpting the nasal support structure.

The tissues are then re-laid over the revised frame and the incisions are stitched precisely. A small plastic splint is applied to the outside of the nose to reduce swelling and to help maintain the perfect shape while the nose heals. Soft, absorbent material may be placed inside the nose to keep stability along the separating wall of the air passages known as the septum. Instead, soft nasal supports that allow nasal breathing post-operatively can be positioned.

After the completion of the surgery, patient will be monitored in the post anaesthesia recovery area until he or she feel well enough to get discharged from the hospital. A large number of patients do not come across any major pain, however, analgesic medications can be prescribed as needed for post-operative discomfort. Whether padding is put inside the nose or not, most patients will comment that their nasal breathing is limited in the first few days after surgery. This is a result of intranasal swelling and as the swelling subsides, the breathing improves. The person’s face will feel puffy, particularly the first day post-surgery. Some patients may encounter swelling and/or bruising around the eyes. This typicallydwindles in the first 2-5 days after surgery. A cold compress is found to help minimize and decrease the bruising and any uneasiness. Absorbable sutures are usually used inside the nose and do not need removal. Any external seals, if needed, are eliminated in 5-8 days. Nasal dressings and splints are also removed at 5-10 days after surgery.

The role of surgeon conducting the surgery is paramount and this is why it is recommended to bank upon a reputed facial surgeon who possess years of expertise into the said domain. Over the past few years, India has emerged out as an epicentre of facial enhancement surgeries with millions of people coming from different parts of the world to get exemplary healthcare services at much reduced price.
