About Nephrology

Nephrology refers to a branch of medical science that remains concerned with the health of kidneys. As kidneys play a vital role in the upkeep of our body’s general health, it is necessary to keep a close check of them every time. Their primary function is to flush out the waste products and excess fluids from the body. The kidneys maintain the fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base regulation that are changed by several disease conditions as well as drugs and toxins.

Nephrology looks after the examination of the normal working of the kidneys as well as its diseases. The diseases that come under the scope of nephrology include:-

  • Glomerular disorders that affect the small-size filtering elements of the kidneys known as the glomerulus
  • Urine irregularities such as excess excretion of protein, sugar, blood, casts, crystals etc.
  • Tubulointerstitial diseases affecting the tubules in the kidneys
  • Renal vascular diseases affecting the blood vessel networks within the kidneys
  • Renal failure that can be sudden or acute or long term or chronic
  • Kidney and bladder stones
  • Kidney infections
  • Cancers of the kidneys, bladder, and urethra
  • Effects of diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure on kidneys
  • ·Acid base imbalances
  • Nephrotic syndrome and nephritis
  • Ill effects of drugs and toxins on the kidneys
  • Dialysis and its long term complications - dialysis includes hemodialysis as well as peritoneal dialysis
  • Autoimmune diseases including autoimmune vasculitis, lupus, etc.
  • Polycystic kidneys diseases where large cysts or fluid filled sacs are formed within the kidney impairing its functions - this is a congenital and inherited or genetic condition
  • Hydronephrosis

In India, there are many leading hospitals that provide specialized Nephrology services to treat kidney diseases of all types. A large number of people from different parts of the world come to seek exemplary medical care by world’s leading nephrologists.

Depending on your case and your physician’s assessment, your condition may be treated using one or more various procedures. Some of those procedures are listed below for your convenience. Please note that this is not a comprehensive list and may vary depending on your specific diagnosis.

Kidney Transplant in India

A kidney transplant refers to a surgical procedure in which a healthy kidney from a donor is implanted into a patient with end-stage kidney disease. One of the most common transplant surgeries, the procedure normally allows a greater freedom of lifestyle than kidney dialysis, the only other treatment for kidney failure. The most common cause of end-stage kidney disease in all over the world is diabetes, but it also may be caused by other diseases. In many cases, a kidney transplant may be ruled out if the patient has certain types of infections, trouble taking medicine, heart/lung/liver disease, hepatitis or other infections, or a history of smoking, drug use, or alcohol abuse.

The healthy kidney must be donated by a living person (usually a close relative) with certain genetic similarities to the recipient or by someone who recently died (or their family). Most living donations are performed laparoscopically, which doesn't require the body to be fully opened and thus typically affords donors a shorter hospital stay, accelerated recovery, and a faster return to work. If patients needing kidney transplantation do not have a living donor available with matching tissue characteristics, they may be placed on a waiting list. The wait could be years, as the number of donated kidneys is small compared with the number of people on the list.

Kidney transplant patients coming to India can expect comprehensive, collaborative, and compassionate pre- and post-transplant care from an experienced, multidisciplinary team of specialists that includes surgeons, nephrologists, nurses, transplant coordinators, pharmacists, mental health professionals, and transplant social workers. Our highly skilled, dedicated surgeons and nephrologists are recognized leaders in their field, and India is a major training center for transplant surgeons and nephrologists now serving at some of the nation’s best medical centers.

Dialysis denotes the process of filtering and removing waste and excess fluid from the body, typically necessary when the kidneys are not able to adequately filter the blood on their own. Dialysis allows patients with kidney failure to live productive lives.

The two main types are hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. With hemodialysis, the blood flows out of the body into a machine that filters out the waste products and returns the cleansed blood back into the body. With peritoneal dialysis, the cleansing occurs inside the body. Dialysis fluid is injected into the peritoneal (abdominal) cavity, and waste is filtered through the peritoneum, the thin membrane that surrounds the abdominal organs. Each type of dialysis has its own advantages and disadvantages. Patients typically may choose the type that best suits their lifestyle and needs.

This procedure may be used to treat or diagnose several different conditions. We have listed some of these conditions below for your convenience. Please note that this is not a comprehensive list and may vary depending on your specific diagnosis.

Renal Failure

Renal failure, or kidney failure, takes place when the kidneys are no longer able to effectively filter waste products from the blood. The resulting build-up of waste products in the body can cause symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, shortness of breath, lethargy, and confusion. The inability to remove potassium from the bloodstream may lead to abnormal heart rhythms and sudden death. Initially, kidney failure may not produce obvious symptoms. There are many causes & symptoms of kidney failure, and treatment of the underlying disease may be the first step in correcting the kidney problem. Some causes of kidney failure are treatable and the kidney function may return to normal, but it may be progressive and irreversible in other cases. Kidney failure may eventually require dialysis (blood filtering) or a kidney transplant to maintain life.

Kidney Tumour Ablation

Kidney tumour ablation is actually a treatment for a distortion in the renal tract. Ablation is meant to treat kidney tumours such as renal cell carcinoma. Ablation can also be used to treat cancerous tumours in various other organs in the body. Ablation is an effective treatment for small cancers, carries minimal risk, and requires a minimal hospitalization. There are different types of kidney tumour ablation. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), a minimally invasive treatment, is an image-guided technique that heats and destroys cancer cells by employing ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging to help guide a needle electrode into a cancerous tumour. High-frequency electrical currents are then passed through the electrode, creating heat that destroys the abnormal cells. Another technique, cryoablation, also delivers energy but rather than killing the tumour with heat, it uses an extremely cold gas to freeze it via a probe that is inserted through the skin. Interventional radiologists perform the procedure through a small nick without the need for an operation. This procedure is done under local anaesthesia. Most of the patients receive intravenous sedation, which makes the procedure easier to tolerate.
