About Nephrectomy

Nephrectomy is typically a surgical procedure that involves the remove all or part of a kidney. There are basically three types of nephrectomy:

Radical nephrectomy- The surgeon eliminates the entire kidney, the layer of fat around the kidney, the tube (ureter) that flushes out urine from the kidney to your bladder, the adrenal gland, and adjoining lymph nodes.

Partial nephrectomy- The surgeon removes only the part of the kidney that is damaged, which enables the remaining part of the kidney to work as usual. You may hear your doctor call this "nephron-sparing" surgery.

Simple nephrectomy- The surgeon removes only the kidney.

In general, there are two ways to do the surgery:

Open surgery-During this procedure, the surgeon will take out your kidney by making a long cut (incision) in the front or side of your abdomen. The incision tends tomake a scar that will fade with time.

Laparoscopic surgery - The doctor will introduce a thin, lighted tube (laparoscope) and surgical tools by makingvarious small cuts (incisions) in your belly. The doctor will then remove your kidney through one of the incisions. The incisions will leave smaller scars in comparison to open surgery. Some doctors may do robot-assisted surgery. The surgeon manages the robotic arms that hold the tools and scope.

The entire procedure generally takes between 2 to 4 hours and patients are given general anaesthesia that makes them fully asleep. People generally spend 3 to 5 days in the hospital for this surgery.

This surgery is typically performed to treat kidney cancer. Simple nephrectomy may be carried out to remove a kidney that is distorted or damaged and not working properly. It's also done to yield a healthy kidney for organ donation. In some cases, a nephrectomy is done to manage a diseased or severely damaged kidney. In the case of a donor nephrectomy, the urologic surgeon removes a healthy kidney from a donor for transplant into a person who needs a functioning kidney.

If you need to get both kidneys removed, or if something happens to your remaining kidney, you will have to get wastes and fluids eliminated through dialysis or your kidney replaced through a kidney transplant.

This surgery is found to be more difficult in comparison to many other surgeries, so getting an experienced surgeon is extremely necessary. So is having your surgery done at a hospital or medical centre where many of these surgeries are done. This can make a difference in how well your surgery goes.
