About Lasik Eye surgery

LASIK, or "laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis," is the most widely chosen laser eye surgery for the treatment of myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. Similar to other types of refractive surgery, the LASIK procedure reshapes the cornea to enable light entering the eye to be properly focused onto the retina for clearer vision.

In most cases, laser eye surgery is pain-less and completed within 15 minutes for both eyes. The results — improved vision without eyeglasses or contact lenses — can generally be seen in as little as 24 hours.

The Procedure

At first, an eye surgeon employs either a mechanical surgical tool known as a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser to make a thin, circular "flap" in the cornea.

The surgeon then folds back the hinged flap to reach to the underlying cornea (called the stroma) and eliminates some corneal tissue using an excimer laser. This highly specialized laser uses a cool ultraviolet light beam to remove ("ablate") microscopic amounts of tissue from the cornea to redesign it so it more precisely focuses light on the retina for better vision.

In case of nearsighted people, the objective remains on flattening the cornea; with farsighted people, a steeper cornea is required.

Excimer lasers are also found to treat astigmatism by leveling an improper cornea into a more normal shape. It is a misconception that LASIK cannot treat astigmatism.

After the laser reshapes the cornea, the flap is then laid back in place, covering the area where the corneal tissue was removed. Then the cornea is allowed to heal naturally.

Laser eye surgery requires only topical anesthetic drops, and no bandages or stitches are required.

Before a LASIK surgery is performed, eye doctors may apply numbing eye drops to your eye to avert any discomfort during the procedure. Your doctor may also give you some medication to help you relax.

Upon completion of your LASIK surgery, the surgeon will ask you to take rest for some time. You may experience a momentary burning or itching sensation just after the procedure. After a short post-operative exam, you can even drive you home.

Laser eye surgery provides various benefits and can intensely improve your quality of life. Most people achieve 20/20 vision or better after the surgery, but LASIK results also tend to vary. Some people may achieve only 20/40 vision or less.

If you have mild residual refractive error after LASIK and you want sharper vision for certain activities like driving at night, prescription lenses with anti-reflective coating often can be helpful. Also, if you are sensitive to sunlight after LASIK, ask your eye care professional about eyeglasses with photochromic lenses.

If you have any condition that can affect how your eyes respond to surgery or heal afterwards, you must wait until that condition is resolved. Examples are severe dry eye syndrome, conjunctivitis (pink eye), infection and any type of eye injury.

If you have persistent dry eyes, where you do not produce enough tears to keep your eyes lubricated and healthy, LASIK surgery may aggravate this condition. Common symptoms of dry eyes include burning or stinging, a gritty sensation in the eye, reduced tolerance to wind, intermittent blurry vision, and even excessive tears in some cases. If you have some of these symptoms, be sure to discuss them with your doctor prior to surgery.
