About Gasterenterology

Gastroenterology refers to the study and analysis of the functions of the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. A Gastroenterologist does not perform surgeries but usually performs day care procedures through endoscopes.

Below are the services that come under the purview of gastroenterology:

  • Diagnostic & Therapeutic Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.(Endoscopic examination of food pipe, stomach & small intestine).
  • Diagnostic & Therapeutic Lower gastrointestinal Endoscopy Colonoscopy. (Endoscopic examination of the large intestine).
  • Diagnostic & Therapeutic Endoscopic Ultrasound-(EUS) (for cancer of food pipe, stomach, gallbladder, pancreas & for jaundice & pancreatitis).
  • Advance Therapeutic ERCP (Treatment for obstructive jaundice due to stones or cancers of biliary system or pancreas / Treatment of chronic pancreatitis).
  • Diagnostic & Therapeutic Single Balloon Enteroscopy (for disease of small intestine-bleeding tumor)
  • Endoscopic Treatment for Obesity-(Intragastric balloon placement)
  • G.I. Physiology & Motility studies. (Difficulty in swallowing & acid reflux)
  • Consultation in Gastroenterology - For diseases related to the gastrointestinal tract (food pipe, stomach large intestine, small intestine, gall bladder, Liver & pancreas)
  • IBS-(Lifestyle modified disease for gases in stomach, constipation, diarrhea, lower abdominal pain & blood/mucus in stools).
  • IBD-Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Profuse bleeding, Perforation, Strictures and obstruction, Fistula and perianal disease)

A gastroenterologist needs to have a detailed understanding of the normal physiology of all the above-mentioned organs as well as motility through the intestines and gastrointestinal tract in order to maintain a healthy digestion, absorption of nutrients, removal of waste and metabolic processes.

He also needs to have a detailed understanding of diseases affecting the organs of the gastrointestinal system like:

  • Peptic ulcer disease
  • Gastric cancers
  • Oesophageal cancers
  • Achalasia
  • Barret’s oesophagus
  • Colon polyps
  • Colon and bowel cancers
  • Pancreatitis
  • Pancreatic cancers
  • Cholecystitis
  • Biliary tract disease
  • Gallbladder stones and cancer
  • Hepatitis
  • Gastroesophageal reflux
  • Colitis
  • Nutritional problems and malabsorption,
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • A host of other disease conditions

During endoscopy, hospitals have been able to provide specific testing and therapeutic modalities. These include the following:

  • Testing for Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori) infection, a common cause of inflammation and ulcers in the stomach and small intestine.
  • Tissue biopsies to diagnose specific diseases.
  • Variceal banding (to treat and/or prevent further bleeding from esophagealvarices).
  • Hemorrhoidal banding (to treat bleeding hemorrhoids).
  • Polypectomy (removal of potentially pre-cancerous polyps).
  • Palliative ablation of cancers obstructing the gastrointestinal tract by argon photocoagulation (APC) technique.

In general, types of diseases currently being attended in the OPD clinic are:

  • Gastrointestinal: Common diseases being seen include chronic abdominal pain due to peptic ulcer disease, upper GI cancers, esophagealvarices, chronic diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hemorrhoid bleeding and colon cancer.
  • Hepatic: Common diseases being seen include cirrhosis with ascites, unexplained elevations of liver tests, hepatitis B.
  • Hepato-Pancreatico-biliary: Common diseases being seen include gallstone disease, pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer.
