About Discectomy

Discectomy refers to the surgical removal of part or all of a herniated vertebral disc. The disc is eliminated by first cutting the external annulus fibrosis and wiping out the nucleus pulposus to ease pressure on the nerve root. A dissection is then carried out to detach a ligament that ranges from front to back in order to reach the spinal canal and remove any bone spurs or disc material protruding through the ligament.

During the procedure, an incision (cut) is made on the back over the affected area of spine (. A small amount of disk and bone will be removed from over the nerve roots. The size of the incision will depend on how many vertebras, or segments of the spine, are affected. Your doctor will talk with you about the type of operation you need. The surgery will take about one to three hours. The average length of stay in the hospital is one to three days.

The incision will be closed with either metal staples or stitches, which may be placed with Steri-strip tapes, paper like strips that attach to your skin and help keep the sides of the incision from shifting. The metal staples will be eliminated by your doctor or visiting nurse about 14 days after the surgery. The stitches will dissolve completely. The Steri-strips will fall off by themselves, usually within two weeks of surgery.

Swelling, protruding, and herniated discs are caused by dimness in the outer rim of the disc (annulus). The internalsection of the disc (nucleus pulposus) then herniates or bulges out through the annulus and compresses a spinal nerve. This results in austere back/neck pain, leg/arm pain, numbness, tingling or weakness.

While every surgery carries some risk, adverse complications are rare and most patients are able to go home the day of the surgery. Your physician will counsel you on these risks prior to the procedure.

For those suffering from herniated vertebral disc, India could be the most sought after option to get this procedure done at low cost. At HealBoat, we provide full-fledged support to individuals looking to avail low-cost medical treatment in the best possible manner.
