About Knee Replacement

Also known by the name of arthroplasty, Knee Replacement Surgery is a surgical procedure that is performed to reemerge a knee damaged by arthritis. Metal and plastic parts are used to top the ends of the bones that form the knee joint, along with the kneecap. This surgery may be considered for patients suffering from severe arthritis or an extreme knee injury.

There can be two types of knee replacement.

Total knee replacement (TKR): Surgery involves the replacement of both sides of the knee joint. It is the most common procedure. The surgery lasts between 1 and 3 hours. The individual will have less pain and better mobility, but there will be scar tissue, which can make it difficult to move and bend the knees.

Partial knee replacement (PKR): Partial replacement replaces only one side of the knee joint. Less bone is removed, so the incision is smaller, but it does not last as long as a total replacement.

Different kinds of arthritis may affect the knee joint. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disorder that typically affects primarily middle-aged and older adults, may result into the breakdown of joint cartilage and adjacent bone in the knees. Rheumatoid arthritis, which causes inflammation of the synovial membrane and results in excessive synovial fluid, can lead to pain and stiffness. Traumatic arthritis, arthritis due to injury, may cause damage to the cartilage of the knee.

The objective of knee replacement surgery is to resurface the parts of the knee joint that have got damaged and to ease knee pain that cannot be managed by other treatments. For the better treatment, many best knee replacement hospitals in India are avaialble with the specialist.

Why go for Knee Replacement Surgery?

Knee replacement surgery is the best treatment for pain and disability in the knee. The most common condition that results in the need for knee replacement surgery is osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is categorized by the failure of joint cartilage. Damage to the cartilage and bones restricts movement and may lead to pain. Individuals with extreme degenerative joint disease may be unable to do normal activities that involve bending at the knee, such as walking or climbing stairs, because they are tender. The knee may swell or "give-way" because the joint is not stable.

If medical treatments don’t produce satisfactory results, knee replacement surgery may be an effective treatment. Some medical treatments for degenerative joint disease may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate
  • Pain medications
  • Limiting painful activities
  • Assistive devices for walking (such as a cane)
  • Physical therapy
  • Cortisone injections into the knee joint
  • Viscosupplementation injections (to add lubrication into the joint to make joint movement less painful)
  • Weight loss (for obese persons)

The procedure

Knee replacement requires the patient to make a stay in a hospital. Procedures may differ basis your condition and your doctor's practices. Knee replacement surgery is most often performed while you are asleep under general anesthesia. Your anesthesiologist will discuss this with you in advance.

Knee surgery may be a viable option for patients who experience:

  • Severe knee pain or stiffness that prevents them from carrying out everyday tasks and activities, such as walking, going upstairs, getting in and out of cars, getting up from a chair
  • Moderate but continuous knee pain that continues while sleeping or resting
  • Chronic knee inflammation and swelling that does not improve after taking medications or resting
  • Knee deformity, where there is a noticeable arch on the inside or outside of the knee
  • Depression, resulting from an inability to carry out daily or social activities
