Type 2 diabetes is a health disorder that evolves when the body's tissues cannot utilize insulin appropriately. Over a period of time, the pancreas cannot generate sufficient amount of insulin. Insulin is basically a hormone that helps the body's cells consume sugar (glucose) for carrying out various tasks from running to cooking. It also enable the body store extra energy in muscle, fat, and liver cells.

In the absence of insulin, the sugar cannot fetch into the cells to do its job. It stores in the blood instead. This can lead to high blood sugar levels. An individual suffers from diabetes when the blood sugar remains excessively high in a period of time. High blood sugar can cause issues related to eyes, heart, blood vessels, nerves, and even kidneys. High blood sugar also makes an individual more likely to face serious illnesses or infections.

When it comes to effects of Type 2 Diabetes on children, doctors believe the major risks for children getting type 2 diabetes, including overweight, not adequately physically active, and having a family history of the disease.

Moreover, the hormones discharged during the early teen years make it difficult than general for the body to consume insulin correctly. This issue is known as insulin resistance. It can cause diabetes.

What are the symptoms?

Majorities of children with type 2 diabetes do not get symptoms in the initial examination of the disease. If there are symptoms, they generally are mild and may include:

  • Need to pee more often.
  • Being a bit more thirsty than normal.
  • Shedding a little weight for no clear reason.

Foods rich in fiber such as whole grain cereals and bread, lentils, fruits, and vegetables should be consumed. In a similar way, foods low in trans and saturated fats such as lean meat, chicken, yogurt and cheese must be a part of your child's diet. Processed foods, along with sugary drinks, should be avoided when it comes to plan a diet for your child.
     
  3. Encourage healthy eating habits – Though consuming healthy foods make a great impact, the eating habits of your child also play a great role in the prevention of diabetes. For example, fruits must be a part of your child’s diet along with protein foods and whole fiber foods. Make sure to include one cup of no-fat or low-fat milk in your diet.
