Gallbladder refers to a pear shaped organ that is small in size and is present on the right side of the abdomen, beneath the liver. The job of this organ is to store and use the digestive fluid that your liver produces. When a form of cancer begins with this organ, that form of cancer is called the call bladder cancer.

An uncommon malignancy, there are chances of curing it when it is discovered in the earliest stages. However, in most cases, the symptoms are recognized way too late and the prognosis does not look good.  However, what are the symptoms of this disease and how to treat them? These are the questions that we are going to look into in our blog Gallbladder Cancer: what are the symptoms and how to treat them?

Gallbladder cancer symptoms

When it comes to the matter of Gallbladder cancer symptoms, you should know that they are quite common. That is what makes them so difficult to track at early stages. These symptoms are as follows:

  1.  Fever that is constant and low
  2. Abdominal bloating that would make you feel like you are full even though you haven’t eaten yet.
  3. Weight loss with any explanation.
  4. Extreme nausea accompanied with vomiting.
  5. Abdominal pain that is particularly centred on the upper right part of the abdominal region.
  6. Jaundice like symptoms that yellows the skin and causes the eye to be whitened.

Now, if any of the above symptoms are extra persistent, you need to get to the doctor as soon as possible.

Causes of Gallbladder cancer

There have been no discernable reasons as to why gallbladder cancer happens. What we do know is that there are mutations in the gallbladder cells that playa huge part in developing this issue. However, the true cause is not yet known. However, there are risk factors that you should be aware about. These factors are the following:

  1. Sex: gallbladder cancer is a lot more prevalent and common in women.
  2. Age: the risk of gallbladder cancer increases with age.
  3. Gallstones history: If you have a history with gallstones, then the chance of cancer is present. However, there is no need to worry about it that much, for the chance is still low.
  4. If there are other gallbladder conditions or diseases: If there is some kind of chronic gallbladder infection or any other issue pertaining to the gall bladder, then there is higher risk of gallbladder cancer as well.

Gallbladder cancer treatment

Gallbladder cancer treatment is comprised of many factors. If the cancer has been detected at an early enough stage, then there are surgical options that can be looked into. However, if the stages are late, the treatment shifts to palliative rather than curative. Meaning that at late stage, the treatment is not meant to cure the issue, it is meant to control the symptoms.

  1. Early stage treatment: Surgery-
    1. Removing the gallbladder through surgical means.
    2. Removing the gallbladder and a part of the liver through surgical means.
  2. Late stage treatment:
    1. Chemotherapy: Injecting cancer killing drugs into the system.
    2. Radiation therapy: Using radiation to kill cancer cells.
    3. Using stent to relieve the bile duct blockage.

These treatments are provided to patients who have gall bladder cancer in India.  These treatments have been proven to be viable. However, make sure to make some arrangements if the cancer is detected late. It is because despite there being a treatment and the success at it, the end result can be random.
