Cancer is the disorder characterized by the uncontrollable growth and reproduction of the abnormal tissue cells. It is not necessary that the abnormal cells will grow at a particular place rather it can grow anywhere in the body, and the symptoms and treatment depend on the type of cancer and its location. The female reproductive organ can be affected by multiple cancers one of which is vulvar cancer.
Vulvar cancer is a tumor in the vulva or a female’s external genitals. The vulva is made of the inner and outer lips of the vagina, the clitoris, and the opening of the vagina, which is called the introits. Moreover, the glands near the vaginal opening are also part of the vulva.

At the initial stage of vulvar cancer a woman may not recognize too many indications but with the further development, the signs of this disorder may become prominent.
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Itching in the vulvar area
  • A discolored patch of skin
  • Pain with urination
  • Pain and tenderness in the vulvar area
  • A lump or wart-like sores on the vulva
If a patient discovers any of these symptoms mentioned above she must consult a doctor without a delay. The early detection of the disease and the adequate treatment helps to improve the survival chances of the patient and prevent the tumor from progressing further.

The vulvar tumor is of several types affecting the outer portion of the female genitalia. In order to determine the type of vulvar cancer, the physician will conduct a physical examination and Pap smear.  He will take a small sample of tissue through an excisional or punch biopsy.  Further, he will examine the sample under a microscope to look for evidence of vulvar cancer and, if found, determine its type and stage. The various types of vulvar tumor are as follows-
  • Squamous cell carcinoma – It is the most common type of vulvar cancer. It is commonly formed at the edges of the labia majora, labia minora or the vagina. This disorder is preceded by precancerous cellular changes and gradually grows over the course of several years.  Usually, they affect the middle-aged and old aged women.
  • Vulvar melanoma- This is the tumor beginning on the skin of the vulva. More specifically it affects the pigment-producing cells of the vulva, which provide color to the skin.
  • Sarcomas- It is the rare type of cancer that forms in the muscle layer, fat cells or blood vessels under the skin and tend to grow quickly. Contrary to the other common type of tumors this disorder can develop in women of any age.
  • Adenocarcinoma – This is the kind of tumor originating in the glands within the vulvar skin. This disorder usually begins from in cells of the Bartholin glands.  Very often this tumor is confused with the cyst.
  • Basal cell carcinoma- It is the rarest type of vulvar cancer. This cancer generally formulates on the skin which is exposed to the sun.
We highly recommend all women to look out for any of signs of vulvar cancer and see a doctor in case you find any of the symptoms.
