Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer after the skin cancer. Mostly breast cancer is found in women. However, in some of the rarest cases, it may formulate in the breast of men also. With this article, we will understand the types and causes of breast cancer comprehensively.


Cancer arising due to the abnormal growth of cells in the breasts is called the breast cancer. This cancer may develop in different parts of the breast like the duct carrying milk to the nipples, glands making milk and some other tissues. Usually, the person suffering from breast cancer can feel it as a lump but in some cases, the breast cancer may not result in the formation of lump. One important thing to be understood here is that mostly the lumps formed in the breast are benign and are not malignant i.e. non-cancerous. The benign breast cancer does not spread to other parts of the body and is not life-threatening. However, it is still crucial to get it checked by the doctor in order to prevent it from taking the shape of breast cancer. Through this article, we will discuss the various types and causes of breast cancer.

Facts on breast cancer

Before moving forwards let us take a brief glance at some of the crucial facts on breast cancer stated below-

  1. The risk of breast cancer in India is rising day by day.  In the studies has been estimated that around 1 in every 28 women is prone to develop breast cancer.
  2. The proximity of occurrence of breast cancer in an urban area is much higher than in rural areas. Like in urban areas 1 in every 28 women suffers from breast cancer while in rural areas 1 in every 60 women suffer from this cancer. 
  3. About 25% of the cancer cases diagnosed in India are breast cancer.
  4. The deaths from breast cancer arearound 20% then all other cancer found in a woman.
  5. Around 61% of Indian women who are diagnosed with breast cancer are in the age group of 35-50 years.

Types of Breast Cancer

  • Ductal Carcinoma In Situ- It is a kind of non-invasive breast cancer that originates inside the milk ducts and does not spread to any normal surrounding breast tissues. This is benign cancer that does not spread to any normal surrounding breast tissues.
  • Invasive lobular carcinoma- This is the second most common type of cancer that formulates in the milk-carrying lobules that perform the function of emptying out ducts carrying milk to the nipple. This type of breast cancer can spread to other neighboring tissues in the breast and possibly to other parts of the body.
  • Invasive ductal carcinoma- It is a most common type of breast cancer and is also known as the infiltrating ductal carcinoma. This cancer can invade or spread to the surrounding breast tissues.
  • Medullary carcinoma-This is one of the less aggressive types of breast cancer. It is the rarest type of cancer and subtype of invasive ductal carcinoma. They mainly affect the women of the 40s to 50s years of age.
  • Inflammatory breast cancer- As the name suggests inflammatory breast cancer exhibit the symptoms like inflammation and redness in the breast.  This is kind of cancer that blocks the lymph vessels in the breast skin. 
  • Triple-negative breast cancers- It is not so common type of cancer that involves the cancerous cells who do not have receptors for the hormone estrogen, progesterone,and the Her2 protein. This type of cancer is most commonly found in younger and African women than others.
  • Paget's disease of the nipple-It is a rare type of cancer that originates in the darker circle skin around the nipple called the areola. It can be found in both the male and females. Some of the most common symptoms of this disorder include crusting and redness around nipples.
  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma- It is a type of malignant tumor with the deceptive benign appearance. This cancer comprises of both the glandular and cystic features.

Causes of breast cancer

There are various risk factors that can contribute to the development of breast cancer. Some of these factors can be managed while others are uncontrollable factors. Below we have listed out some of the main causes of breast cancer-

  • Age- Increased age elevate the risk of developing breast cancer significantly. It is estimated that 8 in every 10 cases of breast cancer occur in the women over 50 years of age.
  • Genetic- If a person has a family history i.e. they have close relatives who suffered from breast cancer then they are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer.
  • Dense breast tissues- Our breast is made ofthousands of tissues that produce milk. In some womanglandular tissue contains a more concentration of breast cells than other breast tissue, making it denser and putting them at a risk of developing breast cancer.
  • Contraceptive pills- The intake of contraceptive pills on regular basis can put you on the higher risk rate of developing breast cancer.
  • Alcohol-The amount of alcohol you consume can be directly linked to the development of breast cancer.Researchers have shown that women consuming alcohol on regular basis are at a greater risk of developing breast cancer than others.
  • Radiations-If you have received any kind of radiation in your chest area during the x-rays, Ct-scans than you are slightly at the risk of developing breast cancer.
