  • Use of tobacco products including smoking and chewing tobacco
  • The absence of a nutritious diet
  • Very poor dental hygiene
  • Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a common virus sometimes found in saliva
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV infection), a sexually transmitted virus
  • Inherited Syndromes

What are the procedures of Diagnosis?

Before going through the examinations procedure the doctor will ask the patient about his habits of drinking and smoking.  After that, he will conduct the following procedure to detect the presence of throat cancer-

  1. Endoscopy- Through this method, the doctor may use a special lighted scope (endoscope) to get a close look at your throat. The very small camera at the end of the endoscope is used to transmit images to a video screen that your doctor watches for signs of abnormalities in patient’s throat.
  2. Biopsy- In case the doctor found any inconsistency during the procedure above he may go ahead with the biopsy. He will collect the tissue sample from your throat and examine it under the microscope to become sure that cancer is present and to determine the type of cancer.
  3. Imaging test- Certain imaging tests like X-ray, CT, MRI, or positron emission tomography (PET) scans can be sued by the doctor to find the extent of cancer and the best way to treat it.

After the detection, staging and determining the type of throat cancer the doctor may choose any of the treatment methods.

What are the treatment methods for throat cancer?

The team of doctors will work with the patient and consider the factors such as the location and stage of your throat cancer, the type of cells involved, your overall health, and your personal preferences. After considering these methods the doctor may determine the best-suited method from the multiple methods mentioned below-

  1. Chemotherapy- When the size of a tumor is large this treatment method is used. It is a treatment method in which the drugs are given to the patient through his mouth, IV or through injection in order to kill the cancerous cells.  Along with damaging the abnormal cells in some cases, this procedure may also damage the healthy cells causing several serious conditions.
  2. Radiation Therapy- It is a treatment method in which high energy x-rays are used to destroy the cancerous cells.
  3. Targeted Therapy- Through this procedure, the drugs are used to stop the spread and growth of cancer cells.
  4. Surgery- If none of the above methods is able to provide relief to the patient the doctor may use the surgical method to remove a tumor.
